Learn the warning signs of scareware, suspicious pop-ups and fraudulent support requests.

Look for pressure tactics

Unexpected messages that demand an immediate call, threaten permanent damage, or insist you pay to unlock a computer are common warning signs. A browser page cannot reliably diagnose every problem on your device.

Do not call numbers in pop-ups

Close the tab or browser using normal controls. Do not call a number shown in an unsolicited warning, install remote-access software at a stranger’s request, or share passwords and one-time codes.

Check the source

Open the security application directly from your device instead of following a pop-up link. If you need help, type the vendor’s known official address into the browser yourself.

If you already interacted

Disconnect from a remote session, remove unfamiliar software, run a scan with a trusted security product and change affected passwords from a separate trusted device. Contact your bank promptly if payment information may be exposed.

Safety first.

Back up important files before making significant changes. Never share passwords, payment details or one-time security codes with unexpected callers or pop-ups.
