Separate router issues from device problems with a few safe checks.
See what is affected
Check whether other devices can connect. If all devices lose access, the router or internet service may be involved. If only one device struggles, focus on its Wi-Fi settings and software.
Restart in a sensible order
Save your work, restart the affected device and follow your internet provider’s instructions for restarting networking equipment. Wait for the router to reconnect before testing again.
Check signal and interference
Move closer to the router and test again. Thick walls, crowded channels and distance can affect performance. Keep router firmware updated using the manufacturer’s official instructions.
Protect your network
Use WPA2-AES or WPA3 where supported, change default administrator credentials and use a strong Wi-Fi password. Do not share router login details with unsolicited callers.
Back up important files before making significant changes. Never share passwords, payment details or one-time security codes with unexpected callers or pop-ups.
